A flat fee is a set amount the client pays for our services as set forth in an agreement. Once the client pays the flat fee agreed upon, the client is not responsible for paying any additional amount towards legal fees, with the exception of case expenses, such as court filing costs, private investigators, and experts. The advantage of a flat fee is that our client knows exactly what they are paying for so they can focus on obtaining the best criminal defense possible for their matter instead of worrying about legal fees becoming more expensive than what they expected. Our team of Bay Area criminal defense attorneys dedicates a great deal of time to each individual case and often provides substantially more hours of work that would otherwise result in a high fee if charged on an hourly basis. Because flat fees offer our clients the benefit of knowing what to expect in terms of legal fees for their matter, we do generally require flat fees to be paid in full prior to commencing work.

In some cases, we are not able to settle on a flat fee because it is impossible to accurately estimate the total cost at the time we are hired. In non-flat fee cases, we often request an initial retainer amount and set up a payment plan for future fees that accrue. The advantage of a non-flat fee is that it allows clients to make payments throughout the case based on the legal fees accrued throughout the duration of the case.  In non-flat fee cases our clients are continuously updated with the status of their case and work closely with their attorney so they know what work needs to be done and what to expect in terms of additional legal fees.
